If they own more than 15% of the company’s shares or receive a salary from the company, all Irish company directors will need an Irish PPS number.

Anyone who wishes to receive a salary from an Irish-registered company must apply for a Personal Public Service number from the Revenue Commissioners.

Individual shareholders who receive dividends from an Irish-registered corporation must also apply for a PPS number.

Anyone who does not already have an Irish Personal Public Service Number must apply to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. This process can take several months due to a large backlog of applications.

If you live outside of Ireland and require a PPS number to engage with a certain entity in Ireland, you can apply for one. If you live in Northern Ireland or the United Kingdom and work in Ireland (as a cross-border worker), you must apply for a PPS number as usual.

Any beneficial owner who owns more than 25% of a company in Ireland is required to register with the Central Register of Beneficial Owners (RBO). This beneficial owner must register for a PPS number if they are also a shareholder and receive dividends.
